Geomorphological Characterization of Rivers and Shorelines

Characterization of the current state of rivers and shorelines is the first step in effectively managing these environments. We have developed tools to provide baseline data and assess stability of both fluvial and coastal systems.

Our knowledge of the current applied science allows us to create appropriate observation collection programs. These programs are the building blocks for solution-focused management plans.

Modelling Dynamic Landforms

In addition to field-based assessments, Geo Morphix uses in-house and commercial models to address hydraulic and morphological questions. Modelling is an excellent tool that allows estimation of future conditions and evaluation of alternative scenarios. We often utilize modelling to complement insight gained from desktop historical assessments and field measurement.

Sediment Transport, Hydrometric and Water Quality Monitoring

With our considerable experience in monitoring sediment transport, hydrometric parameters and water quality, GEO Morphix offers expert analysis and interpretation to provide actionable conclusions and recommendations. We have experience in a wide range of monitoring activities in both natural and constructed environments including:

  • Completing hydrometric measurements in coastal, estuarine, lake, and river environments
  • Completing wave analysis and sediment dynamics estimates in estuarine and along shorelines
  • Sediment loading behind dams and within wetlands

GEO Morphix also offers telemetry-based water quality monitoring, including plans for rapid response to potential construction-related water quality issues.

Emergency Environmental Restoration and Impact Mitigation

Sediment spills may occur for a number of reasons — poor planning, unexpected weather conditions, or operator error— but the best way to limit negative environmental outcomes is to quickly confine and mitigate the impacts.

GEO Morphix team was the first to implement Silt-Smart in Southern Ontario. Our team has substantial experience addressing emergencies related to accidental large-scale sediment releases. We move quickly from emergency site stabilization to managing remedial activities and addressing residual impacts:

  • We assess impacts and develop plans to immediately stabilize sites
  • We limit the extent of impacts
  • We develop practical plans to reverse negative outcomes
  • We can develop plans to limit the potential for future events

GEO Morphix has developed innovative yet practical solutions for remediation

Our low-impact techniques to remove fine sediments from spawning habitat are both practical and low cost. We have experience managing small-scale pumping systems that can be brought to sites and implemented without the need for heavy equipment, particularly for sensitive sites.

Many of our projects have involved restoration of habitat of endangered species and recognize the sensitivity of these systems.
